Study-scoped monitoring and export

Authenticate with a study ID and the researcher password. This is separate from the participant study password in the join link, and only exposes the selected study.

Connect to a study

Participant join link

Generate the study URL and a QR code that participants scan or paste in the StudyTrace app. Enter the participant study password (the one in the join link, not your researcher password); only its hash is stored, so it cannot be shown without it. Add a participant ID to label that participant's device.

Withdrawals and deletions

Audit log of participant withdrawals from the app and data deletions made from this dashboard.

Participant health

Operational data-quality checks from client events, device state, uploads, permissions, and recent study rows. Compliance is answered survey sessions divided by survey prompts the phone reported as delivered over the last 7 days (prompts swiped away before the app next opened may be missed).

Sensor coverage

battery_usage_apps, screen_time_activity, app_usage_combined, phone_use_daily, location_daily_summary, survey_quality, and participant_health are derived research exports.

Include screenshot and photo images

Every raw table and derived export as CSV, plus devices, withdrawals, a codebook describing every column, and a README. Images can make the file large.

ESM survey notifications

Schedule ordinary ESM survey prompts. Fixed mode sends at exact times; random mode jitters around those times by the selected window.

Templates are appended to the questions below; nothing changes for participants until you save. Confirm wording with your IRB and cite the listed source.

Survey questions JSON

Optional quality fields such as studytrace_required, studytrace_branching, and studytrace_randomize_options are preserved in the schedule JSON for analysis and future client support.

Battery screenshot notifications

Schedule prompts that ask participants to upload Settings → Battery → View All Battery Usage screenshots. This section uses an esm_type: 14 photo question.

Screen Time activity screenshot notifications (optional)

Off until you save a schedule. Prompts ask participants to upload Settings → Screen Time → See All App & Website Activity for one day (yesterday by default), which adds pickups and notification counts. The server reads the values from the screenshot; participants do not edit them.

Recent survey responses

Photo ESM answers are rendered as images when the survey question uses esm_type: 14.

Survey quality

Derived response metadata for missing answers, photo answers, latency, and required-question gaps.

Daily phone use

phone_use_daily, derived from lock/unlock events (iOS plugin_device_usage, Android android_screen_events) and split at the participant's local midnight. Night use is 00:00–05:00 local. On iOS these events are only recorded while StudyTrace is running, so check participant health for gaps.

Location daily mobility

Derived daily GPS summaries: coverage, distance, radius of gyration, stops, and accuracy.

Battery screenshot app usage

Participants upload screenshots from Settings → Battery → View All Battery Usage. The OCR pipeline extracts app rows and flags screenshots that need review.

Screen Time activity

screen_time_activity: one daily-total row (screen time, pickups, notifications) plus one row per most-used app for each screenshot.
